Guria

Guria is a small region between Adjara and Samegrelo with almost no resort infrastructure. That is exactly what people come for: the coast is quieter than Batumi, and inland there are tea hills and mountain villages.

What to see

  • Ureki — a black magnetic sand beach with pine forest along the shore.
  • Lake Paliastomi and Kolkheti national park — boat routes through the wetlands.
  • Bakhmaro — a high summer village at around 2,000 metres, reached by dirt road.
  • Ozurgeti — the regional centre, with a market and tea plantations around it.

When to go

June to September for the coast. Bakhmaro only lives in summer, roughly July to September; the rest of the year the village is empty and the road is not always passable.

Batumi beaches: where the water is clearest and where to take children

Every beach here is pebble, and that is the first thing to accept. The second: they differ by the shape of the sea floor, not the surface — some stay shallow for twenty metres, others drop off two steps in. A place-by-place breakdown of who suits which.
