Kutaisi

Kutaisi is older than Tbilisi and was a capital long before anyone had heard of Tbilisi. Today it is mostly used as a base, and sensibly so: the city is light on sights of its own, while almost everything people come for lies within an hour.

What to see

  • Gelati Monastery — founded in the 12th century, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The mosaics and frescoes survive, which is rare for a building of that age.
  • Prometheus Cave — a karst cave with about a kilometre and a half of route, part of it by boat on an underground river.
  • Okatse Canyon — a walkway fixed to a sheer wall, about two kilometres through forest to reach it.
  • Martvili Canyon — turquoise water on the Abasha, boats under an overhanging cliff. An hour away.
  • The Colchis fountain on the main square — enlarged copies of archaeological finds from the burial mounds of western Georgia.

Getting there

The international airport is fourteen kilometres from town and is the main gateway to western Georgia, where most low-cost flights land. Tbilisi is three to four hours by road, Batumi two to two and a half.

When to go

May to October. The caves and monasteries work year round, but canyon paths get slippery after heavy rain and sometimes close. Worth checking on the day.

Martvili Canyon: getting there, what to know, and when the boats do not run

Turquoise water in a limestone cut, a boat under an overhanging cliff, a bridged path along the wall. The place photographs so well that half the visitors leave disappointed: they expected half a day of hiking and got an hour’s walk. Here is how not to be one of them.

What to see in Georgia: an honest region-by-region breakdown

A country you can drive across in a day, where four hours take you from the beach to a glacier. And where a week covers about a quarter of what you planned. A breakdown by region: what to see, how many days it honestly takes, and where people miscalculate.
