Martvili is a small town, known for sitting a few kilometres from the canyon. That is what people come for; the town itself keeps a monastery founded in the early Middle Ages, but it does not need a trip of its own.
What to see
Martvili Canyon — turquoise water, a boat under an overhanging cliff, a bridged path along the wall.
Martvili Monastery — an early medieval foundation on the hill above town.
Balda Canyon — the lesser known neighbour, with a waterfall.
Getting there
About an hour by car from Kutaisi and roughly the same from Zugdidi. Public transport is awkward: you still need a ride from the town to the canyon.
When to go
May to October. The water is cold all year; in summer people swim downstream.
Turquoise water in a limestone cut, a boat under an overhanging cliff, a bridged path along the wall. The place photographs so well that half the visitors leave disappointed: they expected half a day of hiking and got an hour’s walk. Here is how not to be one of them.
