Stepantsminda

Stepantsminda exists mostly for what begins above it. The village is small, but staying over changes the rhythm entirely: up to the church in the morning before the coaches, on to the glacier, back by lunch.

What to see

Gergeti Trinity Church — 14th century, with Kazbek behind it.
The Truso valley — travertine terraces and mineral springs.
The Dariali gorge — the road to the Russian border between sheer walls.
Gveleti waterfall — a short trail from the road, about half an hour each way.

When to go

June to September for hiking. Gergeti is reached all year, but in winter the road above Gudauri sometimes closes, decided on the day.
