Kazbegi is a mountain district in the north along the Georgian Military Road. There is essentially one thing to see, and it earns the drive: the 14th-century Gergeti church on its own hill with Kazbek rising behind it. The church is small, the mountain is enormous, and the scale only lands in person.
What to see
Gergeti Trinity Church — 14th century, 2,170 metres, Kazbek behind it.
Stepantsminda — the village below and the base for every route in the district.
The Truso valley — a side gorge with travertine terraces and mineral springs.
The Dariali gorge — the road to the Russian border between sheer walls.
The Gergeti glacier — a full-day trek for those going above the church.
Getting there
150 km from Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Road, about three hours without stops. Ananuri fortress and Gudauri are almost always taken in on the way, which makes it a full day.
When to go
June to September for hiking. Gergeti is reached all year, but in winter everything depends on the state of the road. A day-by-day plan: seven days in Georgia.
No ready-made tour yet, but we will put one together
Tell us when you are going and who with, and we will come back with a route and a price. A real person who knows these roads does the working out, not a calculator. No prepayment.
A ready week with one base and four day trips. You unpack once, everything worth seeing is within three hours, and the seventh day is deliberately left empty. Here is why, and how to reshape it if you fly into Kutaisi.
A country you can drive across in a day, where four hours take you from the beach to a glacier. And where a week covers about a quarter of what you planned. A breakdown by region: what to see, how many days it honestly takes, and where people miscalculate.
