Telavi

Telavi is small, and what matters is what surrounds it. The density of wineries here is the highest in the country, and that is the reason to come rather than the town itself.

What to see

  • Batonis Tsikhe fortress — the 17th and 18th century residence of the Kakhetian kings, in the town centre.
  • The Chavchavadze estate at Tsinandali — an English park and a 19th-century cellar holding bottles from that century.
  • The plane tree on the main square — around nine hundred years old.
  • The Alazani valley wineries — from large plants to family marani.

When to go

September and October, during rtveli, when estates let you join the picking rather than just taste. Summer is hot; in winter some small family wineries close until spring.
