Samtskhe-Javakheti lies in the south on a high plateau near the Turkish and Armenian borders. It is noticeably colder than the rest of the country, and in summer that is exactly why people come. Almost everything of interest involves either water or stone: mineral springs and cave towns.
What to see
Borjomi — a spa town in the Kura gorge, with a pump room and a national park around it.
Vardzia — a 12th-century cave monastery in the cliff above the Kura, founded under Queen Tamar.
Rabati Fortress in Akhaltsikhe — a church, a mosque and a synagogue inside the same walls.
Khertvisi Fortress — on the road to Vardzia, one of the oldest still standing.
Lake Paravani — the largest lake in the country, over two kilometres up.
Getting there
About two and a half hours from Tbilisi to Borjomi, and another hour and a half to two on to Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia. The region runs along one road, and a route is hard to build without a car.
When to go
May to October. Summers are cooler than in Tbilisi. In winter the Goderdzi pass from the west is closed and the region is only reachable from the east.
A ready week with one base and four day trips. You unpack once, everything worth seeing is within three hours, and the seventh day is deliberately left empty. Here is why, and how to reshape it if you fly into Kutaisi.
A country you can drive across in a day, where four hours take you from the beach to a glacier. And where a week covers about a quarter of what you planned. A breakdown by region: what to see, how many days it honestly takes, and where people miscalculate.
