Sighnaghi

Sighnaghi stands on a hill above the Alazani valley, fully ringed by an 18th-century wall with twenty-three towers. The wall survives along almost the whole perimeter, the towers can be climbed, and that is where what people come for opens up: the whole valley and the Caucasus range behind it.

The town is small and restored: tiled roofs, balconies, cobbles. A couple of hours covers it, which is worth factoring in — it does not need a day of its own.

What to see

  • The defensive wall — almost fully intact, with free access to the towers.
  • Bodbe Monastery — a 9th-century convent beside the town, the burial place of Saint Nino.
  • The viewpoints over the valley — on a clear day the whole range is visible.
  • Wine cellars — qvevri tastings in what feels like every second house.

Getting there

About two hours from Tbilisi. Sighnaghi is usually combined with Telavi and the wineries in a single day — two hours of driving for two hours of walking does not stand on its own.

When to go

September and October bring rtveli, the harvest, when every estate in the valley is working and family ones let you join in. Spring is in blossom and quieter. Winter is silent, and fog often rises from below, leaving the town above the clouds.

More on the region: Kakheti.
