Samegrelo

Samegrelo is a western region with its own language and a cuisine spicier than the rest of Georgia. People come above all for the canyons on rivers running down from the Svaneti mountains: the water is turquoise from the carbonate particles they carry out of the limestone.

What to see

  • Martvili Canyon — the turquoise Abasha, boats and a bridged path.
  • Balda Canyon — the lesser known neighbour, with a waterfall and fewer people.
  • The Dadiani Palace in Zugdidi — the residence of the Mingrelian princes, with a museum and park.
  • Lake Paliastomi and Kolkheti park — boat routes through wetlands.

Getting there

About an hour from Kutaisi to Martvili, roughly two to Zugdidi. Zugdidi is the usual changing point on the way to Svaneti.

When to go

May to October. Canyon water is always cold, though people swim in summer. After downpours the level rises and the boats sometimes stop.

Georgian food: what to order and where it will be the real thing

Khachapuri in Batumi and in Kutaisi are two different dishes with one name. Khinkali are eaten by hand in a set order, or the broth ends up on the table. And a "dry white" in Kakheti is not the drink you were expecting. What to order, how to eat it, and where it will be the real thing.

Martvili Canyon: getting there, what to know, and when the boats do not run

Turquoise water in a limestone cut, a boat under an overhanging cliff, a bridged path along the wall. The place photographs so well that half the visitors leave disappointed: they expected half a day of hiking and got an hour’s walk. Here is how not to be one of them.
